1. William Dedrick Stelting was born in 1796 in Germany. He died !883 in Wisconsin. "In the fall of 1855 William Dedriech Stelting located in the Town of Forest, Vernon Co., [WI] with two of his sons, William and Frederick, and his two daughters, Mary and Salinda. They had come from Hendricks Co., Indiana, to begin life anew in the wilderness of timber that covered Forest Township. William Sr., the father, was born in German in 1796 and immigrated to the USA in 1838. He stopped in Pennsylvania and Maryland and finally settled in Indiana in 1839. In Indiana he lost his wife Elizabeth (she died). She was born in Germany in 1802 and died April 1854. Soon after her death he moved to Wisconsin, coming first to Dane Co. and then in the fall of 1855 to Forest Township. The father lived with his son, William Jr. until the time of his death in Feb. 1883."

2. William C. Stelting was born on 28 Sep 1828 in Preussen Germany. He died in 1913 in Loon Lake Cemetery, Loon Lake, Washington. William Jr was born in Prussia 28 Sept. 1828. He moved to Wisconsin with his father and built his home west of the Burr schoolhouse. He married Sarah Markee who was born 2 Feb 1842 and they were married 20 Dec 1860 (might have been 26th). William Jr moved to Loon Lake, Wa. and located about 1.5 miles due east of the original town in 1910 or 1911, where he raised his family. The two story house still stands today on the north side of the road (per Art Stelting 1996 -- that is Clayton Arthur Stelting).

He was married to Melinda [there are records for an August that show him married to a Renata Foth ... ??]. They had six children, two boys and four girls...missing name of 4th girl.

NOTE: this makes 8 children but dates do not quite agree with Art's since supposedly Maranda died in childbirth with 8th child. The only one Art did not mention was Edith...interersting. to continue with Charlotte's account:

Maranda [Miranda] died at the birth of the eighth child on 2 June 1887. Frederick then married Ida Malosh. They had seven children. He had started to build his new home before the death of Maranda but it was not completed until after his marriage to Ida.

Frederick sold his farm in Forest Township and moved to Tennessee. Later they moved to Loon Lake, WA where they both died.

Apparently they ended up with hardly enough to keep the family in food and clothing. Their first home was about 1 mile south of Loon Lake on the south side of what is now called Grote Road and about 1 mile west of highway 395 where he planted an orchard, some of which still remains. For reasons known only to them, they built another home across the little valley and across the railroad tracks among some huge boulders which seems a very unlikely place to build a home. Both places have long since been destroyed by fire.

Frederick died in 1915, and is buried in the Loon Lake cemetery. Ida then moved to Clayton WA where she lived til her death on 20 Feb 1928.

52. Herbert Willard Stelting was born on 25 Mar 1918 in Vancouver, Washington. He died on 16 Feb 1988 in Grandview, Idaho. Herb lived with his parents as they moved around the NorthWest and at one time lived at Loon Lake but it seems they never stayed long in one

place. Not sure when but his parents were divorced before 1932 and Herb then lived with his mother and her parents. When he was 14 his father died and shortly thereafter Herb ran away from home. Seems his grandmother had a bad habit of finding him jobs with good(?) church members and then making sure they paid her. Anyway he found work at a ranch on Butter Creek near Hermiston where they gave him a home ,room and board and he was able to do his work and attend school. I think they gave him some money too so he could buy school clothes etc. (I cannot remember their names but I did meet them, still living at the same place after WW11 ) The local sheriff came looking for Herb, at the bequest of his grandmother, but when he found out the reasons for his runaway and the fact that he was working as well as going to school he never told the family of Herb's whereabouts. He just told them he was in good hands and doing well. Herb's father had given him a piece of advice which he never forgot - it was:" When you get a joblearn all you can about it and do good work even if you find you don't like it. Then go onto something else and do likewise, this way when jobs are very hard to get you will have had experience and always be able to get work because of that fact." Herb was born with itchy feet and an inquiring mind so it was not hard for him to take his Dad's advice. In the succeeding years he did do a number of things, worked in a bakery, picked fruit, milked cows, worked on a turkey farm andheaven knows what else. By the time he was 17 he had his own gypo logging outfit. Seems he talked the local banker into loaning him the money to buy a truck and a Cat etc. Then procured a timber sale from the Forest, hired fallers and a crew including a cook and began logging in the Blue Mountanins. Must have made money since he was able to pay off the loan and the men and had money to live on. For fun he rode bucking horses at local rodeos and even competed at Pendleton winning a Hanley saddle. Later on he went into partnership with one of the Gilliland boys and they had a sawmill in the Blues." (notes by Teresa Davies Stelting)

Pine Eagle Justice of the Peace Is Also a World War II Veteran

Veteran's Day is a time to pause and think about war, peace and those who served. Today we salute all the men and women who have courageously served, and focus on one special valley resident who spent World War II under a veil of constant bombing.

Teresa Davies Stelting, known to many here as Justice Stelting, was just 15 when war broke out in Europe. She was 17 when she donned a uniform and began serving England in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), of the Royal Air Force.

Bombing of England was widespread and devastating. But Leading Air Craft Woman (LACW) Davies, along with other women in the Auxiliary, did their best to identify and manually plot the location, approaching direction, numbers and height of incoming enemy aircraft. Connected via telephone to visual lookouts and radar sites, the critical plotted information was then transmitted to English pilots. Air attacks were carried out against the enemy aircraft, hopefully destroying them before they could unload their deadly baggage onto the English countryside.

"It's hard to tell someone who hasn't been through it, what the war was like, or what we did in Radar Operations (the control room). It was tense, hectic, scary and sad, all at the same time,' recalled Teresa Davies Stelting. "We worked an irregular watch system without much time off, not getting a lot of sleep. And you knew where people were getting bombed - it could be your parents, your hometown.'

American servicemen took over the Radar Operations at Stelting's base in Debden, England, and she trained them, including an American Indian named Lieutenant Tee Hee who only grunted in response to her instructions. She chuckles at the memory and still wonders if he understood what she was saying.

LACW Davies (Stelting) then moved to an experimental radar station in Kent, England. She worked with an improved radar system that gave the English the capacity to control their own planes offensively, instead of just tracking incoming planes. Working at the radar station, though, didn't guarantee safety from the brutal bombing attacks.

"The installation where I was stationed was hit," said Stelting. "But the scariest night I ever spent was in the air raid shelter. We knew others had been hit, some buried alive. I was lucky, I guess, my name wasn't on any bombs. The wartime joke was that if your name is on it, you'll get it!" Stelting, who isn't much interested in war movies - although she's glad more factual ones like "Saving Private Ryan' are being made that show youngsters the realities of war - didn't want to talk about the war after it ended. She was ready to move on.

Her memories, however, are far from bleak. She grew up in the war, made good friends and learned lessons that she says have served her well throughout her lifetime. The most enduring of which is "you only have today.'

"The only time we have is now,' Stelting emphasizes. "We can plan for tomorrow, look back at yesterday. But the war taught me that there isn't always room for second chances." She lives by this wisdom and often tries to share it with friends who are worried.

"I ask them if it's a case of life and death,' she said. "Usually it's not, and it is amazing what we can live through."

Teresa was recently honored with two medals most of her fellow service women got shortly after the war. She left England after the end of the war and was unaware that the medals were awarded until a friend mentioned it. At the urging of her daughter, she inquired via computer e-mail. The Defense Medal and the War Medal from the Under Secretary of State in England, awarded in honor of her service, arrived this summer. It took 53 years, 11 months from the time the war ended to get her recognition.

"It's a little late, but that's alright," said Stelting who wasn't initially interested. "I was surprised at their weight.

They're heavy - [high] quality. I felt good about it - kind of proud."

Teresa Davies became Teresa Stelting when she married an American GI and came to the United States in 1946. She became a U.S. citizen in Alaska in 1957 and was proud to become an American. Stelting, who was homesteading in a remote area of the Alaskan territory, first arranged to go to the naturalization service in Skagway by boat. The boat didn't show, but luckily a bush pilot friend who saw she wasn't in attendance, arranged with the judge to wait, and flew in to get her.

Stelting's life has been as interesting as her wartime experiences. Her election in 1995 to the Pine Valley Justice Court is only part of a varied life, lived with gusto. In fact, she has been encouraged to write her memoirs. Let's hope she does."

Back to Clayton, WA where I worked at the brick plant for two years. Worked for what is now US West for 34 years, and retired in Nov 1982. Have two children, Lori works for US West in Spokane [as of his letter 6/15/96 to Teresa Stelting] and Marc with the US Border Patrol in Yuma, AZ, which is one reason for me going south in the winter months. Neither of them are married, after marital problems for both of them, whats new in this day and age??? My first wife Donna passed away in June of 1993 after 43 years of marriage. I remarried in February of last year (1995), to an acquaintance of mine who lost her husband in 1991. He was also was retired from US West."

"One of these days I will go over and get a picture of the old Stelting place. It has been remodeled quite extensively in the interior, but the outside is pretty much as it always has been, although much better than in the old days. I also go to the cemetery and clean that up at least yearly and leave a couple of bouquets of flowers on the plots so that it looks halfway decent. We cousins chipped in and I had a stone made up for our Granddad about 4 years ago. I never could figure why he never had a stone after all these years."
